Olive Garden reviewer to receive Neuharth Award

Oct 03, 2012 -- 12:23pm

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - More than six decades after they attended the University of South Dakota together, the founder of USA Today and the author of a viral newspaper column about Olive Garden are reuniting.

Al Neuharth will present 86-year-old Marilyn Hagerty with the 2012 Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media during a ceremony Thursday at USD.

Hagerty is a columnist for the Grand Forks Herald newspaper. She became an Internet sensation earlier this year when her review of the city's new Olive Garden restaurant went viral. She'll join a list of talented journalists who have received the award, including Katie Couric, Larry King and Walter Cronkite.

The ceremony will be a reunion of sorts. Neuharth and Hagerty worked together at The Volante, USD's student newspaper, in the 1940s.
